No matter how cold it might get in your neck of the woods, there's no reason to go into home improvement hibernation during the winter. Home remodeling is a year round business these days, and home contractors are available to help you prepare for the cold season, plan for springtime projects, and make the most of those frigid days indoors. That could mean setting up the ultimate holiday lighting display, or getting to work on a major, home interior project. In winter, basement remodeling, as well as bathroom and kitchen remodeling, are becoming increasingly popular ways for home owners to invest in their property and stay active and productive. With the help of modern technology and a knowledgeable contractor, winter home improvement is becoming quite the extensive field, as the following list of potential wintertime projects shows:

1. Getting Warmer: Winter Roofing, Siding, and More
Before you can make winter your time of home improvement productivity, you have to first make sure that your home is safe from the onslaught of winter itself. Harsh winds, ice, snow, and especially cold temperatures can pose very real threats to your home, and more importantly, the people in it. That's why it's usually wise to bring in home contractors to inspect areas of your home that are essential to your protection and heating during the winter.

Roofing contractors and gutter repair and gutter installation specialists are excellent professionals to call on to make sure your home is protected from the elements overhead. Missing shingles and leaks in the roof or gutters can become a huge problem as the weather changes, so roof repair is vitally important. to have these checked out and repaired right away.

Frozen pipes are another common winter catastrophe, which is why plumbing contractors often specialize in methods for keeping drain pipes heated and insulated. It's important to keep your entire home well insulated too, in order to keep warm air in and cold air out. You can purchase and install insulation yourself in especially vulnerable rooms like the attic, or you can call on a window contractor, electrical contractor, siding contractor, or other specialists to guarantee that your home is well sealed.

Finally, don't forget to have your electrical contractor check your furnace and power systems every year. You'll thank yourself when those first blistery days of December find their way to your neighborhood.

2. Say No to Snow: Snow removal contractors
You can't make it stop snowing, of course, especially if you live in cities like Chicago, Boston, and New York. Snow removal contractors, as well as modern technological options, do make snow and ice removal far easier than at any point in the past, however. A heated driveway is one popular choice many people have installed these days. It is certainly preferable to hours of shoveling. There are also special heating products and chemical solutions that help melt snow and keep your home from getting buried, many of which are now widely available commercially.

3. Winter Remodeling
Once you've set up your home as a heated, protected fortress, why not take advantage of your comfortable surroundings and set your sights on some wintertime home remodeling? A kitchen remodeling contractor or bathroom contractor is happy to help you get your project going in the winter. Basement remodeling is also a great undertaking for the so-called off-season, when you might have less competition at the hardware store, and more time on your hands to plan that new basement or even a home theatre of your dreams. A basement contractor general contractor can advise you on cold weather building procedures, and how to avoid potential winter related delays in your project.

4. Getting In the Spirit: Home Decorations!
In terms of a more aesthetic form of temporary home improvement, holiday decorations certainly can bring a lot of joy to home owners and their neighbors, as well. Sometimes, holiday decoration designs come down to a matter of quality versus quantity. But tastefulness is just part of the equation. It's also important to consider your safety when stringing up lights or putting that plastic Santa Claus on your roof. Always make sure you have someone there to help you, and don't hesitate to call on an expert, such as an electrical contractor, to help you strategize the most effective means of setting up your display and lighting system.

5. Plan for Spring Home Improvements!
Lastly, if you're the type of person who'd rather stay bundled up in a blanket with a cup of cocoa during winter, home remodeling contractors are still available to start helping you gameplan your big home improvement project for the spring or summer. There's no better time of the year to collect your thoughts, develop a concept, and put the plans in order for a kitchen remodeling or bathroom renovation project than winter. Then, when the warm weather does come back around, you'll be thoroughly prepared to tackle your project. It's kind of like a grizzly bear charging out of his cave in the spring, only you won't be anywhere near as hungry.

With more Americans downsizing their household budgets, larger-scale renovation projects are out and frugal remodeling is in. And when it comes to saving money, experts say home improvement projects that increase energy efficiency are among the best investments to deliver paybacks -- now and in the future.
The average return on investment for midrange home improvement projects focused on aesthetic appeal, such as kitchen or bathroom remodels, is down since 2007, according to "Remodeling" magazine.

"Energy efficiency upgrades provide homeowners with the rare opportunity to see a return on their investment almost immediately and at resale," says Kateri Callahan, president of the Alliance to Save Energy, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit dedicated to promoting energy efficiency. "We can't always predict how the market will impact home prices over the long term, but all homeowners can improve their home's energy efficiency to increase its value."

Heating and cooling can account for nearly half of a home's energy bill, according to the Alliance to Save Energy, and with temperatures dropping, it's the right time for homeowners to focus on ways they can trim costs and energy consumption.

"The reality of the new economy is that homeowners want to save money while maintaining the value and comfort of their homes," says Mike Lawrence, vice president and general manager of Insulation Systems for Johns Manville, a manufacturer of building products. "There are economical and smart steps homeowners can take that will positively impact their monthly energy bills today and their home's value tomorrow."

Homeowners can tackle projects that are low in cost and high in value and return on investment, either as do-it-yourself projects or by hiring a professional contractor.

To get started, homeowners should first estimate the current performance of their home by using an online energy efficiency assessment tool, such as the Home Energy Analysis test available at JMHomeowner.com. Online assessments help gauge the savings that could be realized by making efficiency upgrades.

"After evaluating their home, most homeowners will find that adding insulation to their attic is a smart and cost-effective first step, since most homes are under-insulated," Lawrence says. "When adding insulation, homeowners should also consider weatherizing their attic to help eliminate any holes or gaps that may exist in the floor or walls. By using caulk, spray foam or weather stripping to close such gaps, homeowners can further decrease wasted energy."

A programmable thermostat is another cost-effective option that helps boost home energy efficiency. Programmable thermostats let homeowners regulate the temperature of their home to deliver savings without sacrificing comfort. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings.

A triple return on your remodeling investment

Compared to other home improvement projects, energy efficiency upgrades typically come with a considerably smaller price tag, compared to aesthetic-focused renovations like kitchen and bathroom remodels. In addition, there's a triple return on these remodeling investments over the course of home ownership:

* Save on your energy bill today: According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), with a properly air sealed and insulated home, homeowners can reduce their heating and cooling costs by as much as 30 percent. The average U.S. home needs 19 inches of attic insulation for maximum energy efficiency.

* Save up to $1,500 with a tax credit: Through 2010, insulation purchases qualify for a 30 percent federal tax credit for energy-efficiency improvements, which reimburses homeowners up to $1,500 for the cost of materials. Additional incentives from adding insulation or making other energy efficiency improvements may be available from state and local governments and utilities.

* Save for the long term: Investments made in home energy efficiency pay dividends for the lifetime of a home and improve the home's resale value. According to the Appraisal Institute, for every dollar saved in annual utility costs, homeowners can expect to add $20 to their home's market value.

For more information on energy efficient home improvement projects and to take advantage of local incentives, visit www.jmhomeowner.com/insulation/energytaxcredit.asp.

To reduce home heating costs every winter, Americans turn to supplemental heat sources like gas fireplaces, wood stoves and kerosene heaters. While these heat sources can help reduce energy bills and keep homes warmer, experts say users should be aware of - and take steps to mitigate - potential fire and carbon monoxide risks.

"Space heaters and other alternative heating solutions offer cost-effective ways to keep your family warm throughout the winter without heating the whole house, allowing you to lower your thermostat to reduce your energy bills," says Eric Sowder, senior vice president of home improvement retailer Lowe's. "Many products have built-in safety features like automatic shutoffs, anti-tipping devices and heat guards, but be sure to follow all manufacturers' instructions for use and placement of heating devices to avoid serious home injuries and help you rest easy throughout the winter."

About 67 percent of American households use fuel-burning appliances and equipment during the winter months, according to a report by the nonprofit Home Safety Council. Yet 59 percent have not installed a carbon monoxide detector, and many others that do have CO detectors fail to replace missing or dead batteries, the council reports.

"Fires caused by heating appliances overtake cooking fires as the leading cause of home fires in January and February, and CO risks also rise with the use of alternative heating sources," says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council.

Before you begin using a space heater, make sure you've accomplished these basic energy-saving steps first. Sowder advises:

* Improve insulation. Adding insulation and sealing air drafts can trim up to 20 percent off your heating costs.

* Installing a programmable thermostat can save you around $180 per year when used correctly to automatically lower the temperature when you're out of the house.

* Thermal window curtains, like the Eclipse brand available at Lowe's, can save up to 25 percent on heating and cooling bills, block 99 percent of light and reduce noise up to 40 percent.

When using a supplemental heat source to save energy and money this winter, follow this advice from the Home Safety Council and Lowe's to prevent fire and CO dangers:

Reduce fire risk from space heaters

* Be sure your space heater has been tested for safety. A label on the bottom will indicate if it's been tested by an independent agency - look for the initials ETL, UL or CSA.

* Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, including furniture, people, pets and curtains. An adult should always be present in the room when a space heater is running.

* Turn heaters off before you leave a room or go to sleep.

* Heaters should never be used to dry clothing or blankets.

Minimize CO threats

* Place at least one CO alarm in your home near sleeping areas.

* Have your home's central heating system inspected, cleaned and tuned by a trained professional who knows how to repair leaks and other problems.

* Be sure gas appliances like stoves and clothes dryers are properly adjusted and serviced.

* Never turn on the gas cooking range in an effort to heat your home.

* Don't use a gas or charcoal grill inside the house or in a closed garage.

Fireplace and wood stove safety

* Never burn trash, cardboard boxes or Christmas trees in your fireplace or wood stove; they burn unevenly and may contain poisons or cause a fire. Only burn seasoned hardwood, like oak, ash or maple in your fireplace or wood-burning stove.

* Get your chimney inspected and cleaned every year by a professional chimney sweep.

* Before you use the fireplace, be sure to open the flue and keep embers inside fireplaces with sturdy screens or glass doors.

To learn more about staying safe in your home during the winter, visit www.mysafehome.org.
When you clean your house in the spring, you really want it to be clean. Dirt, dust and germs are banned, and all appliances, floors and walls are scrubbed clean. The best way to make sure your living space is clean and healthy is to use safe, natural cleaning products you create yourself, using natural and inexpensive ingredients you can pick up at any natural grocery store.

Even some so-called natural cleansers can contain these same or similar nasty ingredients. And you would know this only if the manufacturer practices full disclosure of ingredients on their labels, which is not required on home care products. Think about it - when was the last time you saw a full ingredient listing on your spray cleaner?

The best way to make sure your living space is clean and healthy is to use safe, natural cleaning products you create yourself, using natural and inexpensive ingredients you can pick up at any natural grocery store. It's cost-effective, not difficult and, like the task of spring cleaning itself, it's satisfying and rewarding. You can craft your own, home-spun versions of everything from carpet cleaner to furniture dusting polish - and have the satisfying assurance that you really are keeping your home clean and green.

Whether you're shopping for prepared natural cleaning solutions or making your own, keep in mind that the word "aromatherapy" is now being applied to everything scented - from dishwashing liquid to laundry detergent. The true practice of aromatherapy relies on using pure essential oils extracted from plants. These natural plant essences nurture us on mental, emotional, physical and even spiritual levels. House cleaning isn't exactly a spiritual exercise, but adding the effects and properties of essential oils to your homemade household products can enhance the experience and the effectiveness of your task.

Essential oils have potent antimicrobial effects along with their clean, pleasant natural aromas. Here are a few "classic" homecare essential oils suggested by the experts at the leading aromatherapy company, Aura Cacia: lemon (clean, sweet, uplifting scent; deodorizing), peppermint (minty, fresh; air purifier; mild pest repellent), eucalyptus and tea tree (air and surface sanitizers; fresh, therapeutic aromas).

Here's a shopping list of key ingredients for making your own homecare products:

* Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) - Gently abrasive scouring powder, odor absorber and an excellent base for making your own cleaning preparations.
* Washing soda (Sodium Carbonate)
* Borax (Sodium Borate) - Natural mineral compound, laundry booster, multipurpose cleanser, fungicide/insecticide.
* White distilled vinegar (Acetic Acid)
* Liquid soap (Sodium Hydroxide) - Choose from vegetable oil-based soaps such as olive oil or sweet almond.
* Distilled water - Clean, distilled water acts as a better carrier and dirt solvent. Tap water will often contain salts and minerals that can lead to spotting and build-up.
* Essential oils
* Spray bottles
* Natural bristle scrubbing brushes
* Squeeze bottles
* Cotton dusting cloth
* Hemp or jute fiber scrubbing cloth
* Tote to put it all in

Follow these simple recipes for making your own basic homecare products:

Basic Spray Cleaner
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon sodium borate
1/4 teaspoon liquid soap
36 drops essential oil*

*Cleansing and purifying essential oils: lemon, tea tree, eucalyptus, spike lavender.

Gentle Scouring Cream
1/2 cup baking soda
Liquid soap
18 drops essential oil*

*Oils that brighten: lemon, lemongrass, grapefruit.

Add essential oils to baking soda and blend. Home siding is one of the biggest home improvement projects which directly impacts on the value and appearance of your home while delivering energy and noise insulation efficiencies. There are numerous siding solutions on the market and they provide a wide variety of choice in style and appearance, cost, ease of installation, maintenance and energy and cost-saving efficiency.

The best siding variant to use when you are looking to maximize the cost-savings from reducing energy consumption
and improve your thermal and noise insulation performance of your home are stucco and vinyl siding.

Originally, vinyl siding panels came with a separate foam insulation backing, but modern vinyl siding solutions are integrated to ease installation and reduce costs further. Integrated vinyl siding panels are much more energy efficient as well.

Stucco siding also provides comparable thermal insulation efficiencies however, vinyl siding is considerably cheaper and simpler to install for home-owners. Stucco siding has undergone a design and production transformation in much the same way as vinyl siding, with modern stucco installations able to trap pockets of air which as an insulating barrier against both cold and hot temperatures.

Stone and cement fiber siding provide the lowest thermal insulation benefits; both these forms of siding have significant benefits to offer, however if you are are looking to improve thermal insulation and energy efficiency of your home, they are not viable alternatives for your home improvement project. Stone and cement fiber siding simply do not trap pockets of air to the extent where it can act as an effective thermal insulator, however they are low cost, low maintenance and extremely strong and durable.

Aluminum siding also offers very low thermal protection and insulation and its efficiency varies in direct proportion to the external temperature. In cold weather, aluminum siding will act as an effective conductor of your heat from inside the home to the colder exterior - as a metal it is an extremely good thermal conductor which is the direct opposite of an insulator! Homes using aluminum siding tend to be cold in winter or produce high heating costs for their owners, though there are insulated aluminum siding panels which can be used but this simply increases the cost of the installation and still does not render them as effective as vinyl or stucco siding solutions.

When a home-owner includes cost-effectiveness in with thermal insulation effectiveness, then there is one clear winner

We all want the finer things in life, but while many of us have expensive tastes, we don't always have lavish budgets. And, when it comes to updating the kitchen, many items can have large price tags that - in today's market - we won't be able to recoup. Luckily, with a little creativity you can achieve a cost-conscious kitchen remodel that gives you maximum enjoyment on a minimal budget.

Finished look for less
Does your kitchen have shiny brass light fixtures? If so, updating these can instantly make your home look more current and stylish. Home improvement retailers offer a wide variety of stylish and affordable choices in popular finishes, such as stainless steel or old world bronze. Or, for an even more economical choice, turn your current lighting fixtures from brass to beautiful by spray painting them with a new contemporary finish. Manufacturers such as Krylon offer unique choices, like Stainless Steel or Oil-Rubbed Bronze, that add beautiful texture for a high-end look.

Fashionable, functional focal point
Most kitchens have a basic faucet - but as the focal point and most-used item in the kitchen, updating this mainstay can create a functional and fashionable change that everyone will notice.

When selecting a new kitchen faucet, look for a high-arc style with pulldown functionality. Models such as the Moen Anabelle Eco-Performance faucet feature this unique design - with the added benefit of up to 32 percent water savings. The multi-function wand offers both a fast-fill stream for filling pots, as well as two Eco-Performance sprays that conserve water while allowing you to complete everyday tasks such as washing dishes or preparing foods - all with the same great performance. Available at Lowe's in both Stainless Steel and Mediterranean Bronze finishes, this kitchen update will have you saying "wow" with the aesthetic, functional and water-saving benefits. For more information on Moen Eco-Performance kitchen faucets, visit moen.com or lowes.com.

Sensational shelves
Nothing can make a kitchen look worse than cluttered countertops. But when it comes to storing necessities or displaying decorative items - there often is no other spot. While adding new cabinetry can solve your storage issue, it can be costly. Instead, build exposed shelves to give your kitchen a more updated look and an open, airy feel.

Home improvement retailers offer a variety of pre-made wood shelving in a variety of materials and finishes, or, if you are handy, you can build your own to save even more. Once they are complete, utilize them for a mix of decorative and functional kitchen items and be sure to keep everything neat and clean for a polished look.

Breathtaking backsplash
Adding ceramic tile in your kitchen can add color, texture and a high-end appearance, but upgrading your entire floor or countertops can be very pricey. Instead, adding a tile backsplash can make a dramatic change - with minimal cost and effort. Whether you're an experienced do-it-yourselfer or not, there are many online step-by-step guides, and many home improvement retailers offer classes for this simple project. And, in no time at all, you'll have a beautiful tile masterpiece that will accent - and protect - your walls.

With these few updates, your kitchen will look great and be more functional - all without breaking the bank.

Courtesy of ARAcontent

A clean windshield is not only useful during rain, sleet and snow. How many times have you experienced a windshield that is smeared with insects, bird droppings, road tar or other messy deposits? Removing such dirt with worn wiper blades is nearly impossible. Usually, you wind up smearing the mess and obscuring your vision even more. If you change your blades regularly, you can avoid these problems and keep your eyes on the road.

Know when to Change Your Blades

Generally, a blade will show physical wear signs like cracking or discoloration. Another way to know is by the quality of the wipe. Streaking or un-wiped areas are a dead giveaway. In addition, if the blades make noise or chattering sounds, then they need to be replaced. However, if you change your blades frequently, you won't have to examine your blades looking for these signs of possible failure.

Blades can be easily damaged by snow scrapers and ice during the winter but the sun is just as damaging to a blade in the summer. By simply doing a little preventative maintenance, you can avoid these uncomfortable situations. Wiper blades should be treated the way you treat engine oil -- you don't wait until you have engine trouble before you change your oil.

How often should you replace your blades? The National Highway Transportation Board recommends that drivers change their wiper blades every year, however the average vehicle owner replaces his/her wiper blades only once every two and a half years. "Most people wait until they are in a downpour and nearly drive off the road before they are convinced it's time to change blades," says Jenifer Maddox, brand manager for PEAK Automotive Products. Some blades, such as Optix Wiper Blades, even come with simple connector systems that make installing the blades on any vehicle a snap.

So if you've been procrastinating about changing your windshield wiper blades, take a few minutes today to change them. You'll be glad you did when your windows are clear and dry this winter

Cabinetry is an easy way to make a home unique, and it doesn't need to stop in the kitchen. Families can create their own perfectly styled cabinetry for the bath, dining room, office, bedroom, laundry room and any other room that begs for storage space.
Cold, harsh winter weather has arrived. Home improvement projects may not be at the top of your to-do list, but this is a great time of year to consider potential exterior enhancements.

        Potential Projects
* Driveway
If your driveway is in need of repair, it's a good idea to fill any cracks before the winter weather creates more damage. Consider a product such as TAMKO's Overdrive Rubberized Driveway Crack Filler, which can be used to repair cracks up to a half-inch wide and performs in all temperatures. If you delay filling the cracks in your driveway, you could end up with expensive repairs.

* Roof
Your roof represents nearly 50 percent of your home's exterior protection, and it's important to ensure your roof is ready for the rough winter. If you're contemplating a roof repair or upgrade, it is important to research all options before making a choice.

A popular roofing choice is asphalt shingles, which cover nearly 85 percent of homes in America. You may want to consider a premium asphalt shingle, which typically comes with a longer warranty and additional advantages that could save you money in the future. For instance, TAMKO's Heritage Vintage laminated asphalt shingles resemble wood shake and offer a 50-year limited warranty.

Develop a List
Before you begin making home improvements, it's a good idea to develop a list of what you hope to accomplish. You should also keep your budget in mind because the cost of construction materials has risen more than 10 percent during the past year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"After determining your projects, it is time to prioritize and select how you're going to tackle these home improvements," says Stephen McNally, vice president of sales and marketing for TAMKO Building Products, Inc. "For some projects you should consider consulting a professional before taking any action."

Schedule a Professional
This time of year, contractors and builders are anxious to schedule outdoor projects for the following spring. If you plan to work with a professional on your exterior home improvement projects, then consider contacting them now. You may have a better chance of being first in line once construction season begins.

No Better Time Than Now
Now that you have a list of home improvement projects, it's important to put your plan in motion. "Don't allow the weather to discourage you," says McNally. "We typically have more idle time during the cold, winter months and this is a good time of year to begin planning those home improvement projects you've been delaying."
While new home construction has come to a grinding halt in most of the country, smaller home-renovation projects are still a viable option for homeowners. In fact, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recently reported a "slight increase" in minor remodeling projects in its third-quarter 2008 Remodeling Market Index.
What does all this mean for homeowners? It spells opportunity. And for those who want to invest in their homes, it's tough to beat bathroom additions and remodels, which rank high on NAHB's list of the most prevalent remodeling jobs.

Bathroom upgrades still provide a solid investment return, even in the present tightening economy, according to Remodeling Magazine's 2008-2009 "Cost vs. Value" report. The magazine estimates that a midrange bathroom redo will recoup nearly 75 percent of its cost; a bathroom addition recoups just under 65 percent.

Get the most for your money. Thinking about a new or improved bath? If so, avoid the high cost and hassle of creating under-floor plumbing connections -- one of the most expensive and time-consuming aspects of any bath project. Instead, use macerating technology, an above-floor plumbing system that can be installed right on top of an existing floor in any part of the house in only half a day.

With this type of installation, waste and water are pumped away and up from the plumbing fixtures through small-diameter piping into the sewer or septic tank. No more digging to set plumbing drainage lines. "This technology is easier, more convenient and less invasive," says plumber Mike Sikorski of East Taunton, Mass., who installs Saniflo brand plumbing products. "It saves my customers an average of $1,000, and that's on the low side."

Mike Coletto, another Saniflo installer and an independent plumbing, HVAC and electrical contractor in Illinois, agrees. "If a bathroom is on your project list, consider above-floor plumbing -- especially if you're planning a basement remodel," he says. "Saniflo makes installing a basement bath a snap."

Here are some additional ways to keep your home bathroom remodel low-cost:

* Fix up vs. Replace: Instead of buying new cabinets, resurface or paint them; update handles and drawer pulls. Repair damaged walls and redo the caulking around sinks. Tile only halfway up the wall.

* Improve vs. Expand: Instead of knocking down walls, gain space by replacing a hinged door with a pocket door. Put in a recessed medicine cabinet. Install a bowed shower curtain to increase the interior shower space.

* Lighten and Brighten: Repaint, using neutral colors. Repair damaged flooring, or install tile right over the floor. Place task lighting over the vanity, instead of installing a window.

* Think Green: Replace old windows with energy-efficient models and you may qualify for a federal tax rebate. Replace leaky faucets with low-flow models.

Learn more about low-cost above-floor bathroom systems by visiting www.saniflo.com or calling toll-free: (800) 571-8191.

If you'd rather watch movies at home than go to the theater, you're not alone. About 73 percent of your fellow movie-lovers feel the same, according to one Associated Press-AOL poll. The majority of respondents said they would rather watch movies at home, citing crowds, uncomfortable seats, expensive tickets and costly concessions among the aggravations of going out to the movies.

No wonder building a home theater is one of the hottest trends in home improvement, and electronic items like home theater systems promise to continue as hot sellers this holiday season. If the idea of having your own home theater is appealing, you don't have to pay pros to do the job for you. You can enjoy a home theater experience without the expense of professional installation by doing it yourself.

Here are some basics for building your own home theater:

Have a Seat

First, decide where your home theater will be. If you have a basement or spare bedroom you can convert, bravo! If you don't have a spare room, a little improvisation can make a home theater work in your family or living rooms. In wide, open spaces like the basement, consider investing in authentic movie seats, complete with tilting backs and cup holders. If you're setting up your theater in the family room, a comfortable sofa and a few recliners will perform well.

Whatever type of seating you choose, remember to position it so that everyone has a good view of the screen.

Screening the Possibilities

A true movie screen - available in various sizes, fabrics and prices - and a projector may be the essence of the movie experience. But if those items are outside your budget, a flat-screen TV makes a great understudy for pricier projection screens. Prices on high-definition plasma or LCD TVs have been dropping over the past year, and retailers are sure to offer some great deals in order to entice buyers this holiday season.

If you're ready and able to invest in a fabric screen, you'll have plenty of choices. High-end cloth screens can roll up and down at the touch of a button. Or, you can find the free-standing square screens similar to those your high school teacher might have used. The type of projector you buy will play a role in deciding what kind of fabric screen you purchase.

Mounting is Paramount

Proper mounting of all components of your home theater system is important for both aesthetics and safety. You'll put a lot of time, thought and some money into pulling together your home theater, so you'll want a better way to store components than to precariously perch them on an accent table or - worse yet - leave them sitting on the floor.

If you've purchased a projector, a ceiling mount will give you the best theater experience. Sanus Systems, a leading manufacturer of mounts for audio-visual components, makes a Universal Projector Ceiling Mount simple enough to be installed by the average do-it-yourselfer.

If you've opted for a flat-screen TV, Sanus also makes a variety of TV mounts that will allow you to put the screen on the wall and angle it to meet your needs. Audio components like speakers also perform best when wall mounted. And you'll want to consider placing components like the DVD player and satellite receiver on the wall too, possibly with a mount from Sanus' line of Vertical Foundations furniture. Visit www.sanus.com to see the range of mounts available for all components of home theater systems.

Once the technical aspects of your do-it-yourself home theater project are taken care of, plug in the carnival-style popcorn popper, pour on the butter and settle down to enjoy the movie theater experience in the comfort of your own home.

Heating and cooling systems account for 56 percent of energy used in a typical home, making it the largest energy expense for most households, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Making smarter decisions about your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system can help you save money on your monthly utility bills.
American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning has developed several tips for cutting your heating and cooling costs without cutting comfort.

Install a programmable thermostat.

Controlling energy costs starts with your thermostat. During winter months, you can save nearly 3 percent of heating costs for each degree your thermostat is lowered. In the summer, cooling costs are cut up to 6 percent per each degree you raise the thermostat. A programmable thermostat will automatically adjust temperatures throughout the day, ensuring greater energy efficiency and enhanced comfort. Some thermostat models even allow homeowners to pre-program desired temperatures for specific times of day. You can save costs by easily adjusting the heating and cooling settings for when times when you're waking up, leaving for work, sleeping or going on vacation.

Upgrade to variable speed heating or cooling.

Depending on your comfort needs and where you live, you can choose from a variable speed furnace or air handler. Both work with the outdoor unit to ensure the greatest energy efficiency and consistent comfort throughout your home. "Variable speed" refers to how a furnace or air handler's indoor blower motor runs. A two-stage, variable speed furnace or air handler operates at an energy-saving lower speed and a higher speed, when needed, for more consistent air circulation. With steadier, variable speeds, these indoor units don't have to turn on and off as frequently, which reduces temperature swings and may help to lower your heating bills.

Consider a hybrid system.

Hybrid HVAC systems bring together two different fuel sources, typically a gas furnace and an electric heat pump, for more efficient heating and cooling. A hybrid system is calibrated to automatically switch between the furnace and heat pump depending on which offers the most economical power for your heating or cooling needs at any given time. Cost savings can be significant. In fact, American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning's Heritage Hybrid comfort system can deliver up to 50 percent savings over a comparable 10-year old system.

Check your filter every month.

It is especially important to check your filter during heavier usage periods such as winter and summer and, at a minimum, change the filter every three months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool -- wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt buildup in your system. Some programmable thermostats will even remind you when to check your filters.

Get the best energy efficiency ratings.

Your heating and cooling system's components should have the highest possible energy efficiency ratings. The higher the rating, the more efficient the product and lower your energy bills can be. Make sure your components meet the following minimums:

* Furnaces: Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratings of 80 or higher

* Heat pumps: Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) ratings of 7 or higher

* Air conditioners: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings of 13 or higher

By following these few easy tips, you and your family can cut energy costs and enjoy cleaner and more comfortable air all year long. For more information on how to cut your home's energy costs without sacrificing comfort or to locate an independent American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning dealer near you, visit www.americanstandardair.com.

In home gardens, in containers and along highways, these low-maintenance roses bloom continuously from spring until frost with little to no effort.

"Anybody can grow these hard-working roses, no matter where they live. If you can grow grass, you can grow landscape shrub roses," says James A. Baggett, editor of Country Gardens Magazine. He likes Knock Out roses for their drought tolerance and disease resistance, especially against black spot.

When designing with shrub roses, think of them as you would any flowering shrub, only this one will bloom continuously all season and do all the work for you!

Here are some tips on using landscape shrub roses in the garden and throughout the landscape.

1. Problem Solvers in Your Landscape
Whether you live in a city or the 'burbs, have a small garden plot or large acreage, the gardening and decorating possibilities with shrub roses are endless. Plant them individually among other shrubs, annuals and perennials, in mixed beds and borders.

2. Pot up a Container
Renowned garden designer Jon Carloftis prefers to plant shrub roses in containers. "I like to give them perfect planting conditions such as good drainage, rich soil and the addition of regular fertilizer that won't be an overdose to neighboring plants," he says. "The results are outstanding when roses are planted in formal urns or combinations of rustic pots."

From small apartments to grand homes, containers filled with shrub roses bring an understated sophistication to any sized deck, porch and patio. Pot them up in large and small containers, around a gazebo, poolside, or your entranceway for the perfect plant for all seasons.

3. Close to Home
Nothing says simple elegance like the original Knock Out rose. Try planting them "en masse" against your front porch or home. The large clusters of cherry-red blooms say "welcome" with a generous bloom cycle of every five to six weeks. Against your house, porch or deck, the rich, eye-popping red color is a sure winner.

4. Second Look Curbside Appeal
Looking for plants with great curbside appeal that add year-round beauty? Cluster shrub roses around a mailbox or blend with perennials to create visual curb appeal. Plant the award-winning Rainbow Knock Out along with perennials. This lovely coral pink rose complements any color scheme and the blooms almost look hand-painted with rich yellow at the base. The plant adds height and color for maximum curbside appeal.

5. Now You See it - Now You Don't
Do you have an unsightly utility unit, shed, trash can, or pool pump you want to hide? How about a slope or a hazardous spot to fill? Group hardy and attractive roses for a showy "cover-up." Try planting Pink Double Knock Out with double flowers in a cheerful bubble gum hue. Unfazed by heat, this hardy shrub rose will cover up those unsightly spots with a pink profusion of color.

6. Borders and More
Want to create a natural privacy fence in your backyard? Shrub roses will keep wandering children, pedestrians or stray dogs out of the landscape with a colorful "living wall" hedge.

7. Create an English Garden
You don't need to dream anymore about having a showcase formal garden. Stake and trim your favorite shrub roses to grow as small rose trees for the look and feel of an English garden. Mix in old-fashioned favorites such as spiraea and hydrangea to create an enviable cottage garden.

It's no wonder that these roses are the number one choice for folks looking for a carefree landscape shrub rose that looks great and performs beautifully. (ARA) - If your bedroom is more like a catastrophe than an oasis, it may be time to wake up and take on the chaos. Designers and sleep experts agree that your bedroom should be a peaceful refuge, a restful retreat that creates an atmosphere conducive to sleep and relaxation.

Five Tips to Turn Chaos into Bliss

1. Cut the clutter: The more stuff you have in the room, the smaller and more confining the room will appear.

2. Adults only, please: Eliminate from the room all reminders that you have children; your bedroom is about you and your partner.

3. Keep the room purposeful: Our homes have become as crowded as our lives and often our bedrooms do double duty as our home offices, but experts agree that you should get the office and computer out of the bedroom.

4. When it comes to bed linens, splurge away!: Your skin will be in contact with your linens for six to eight hours every night.

5. Decoration should be simple but dear to your heart: Stick with colors, textures and images that are meaningful and relaxing to you.

* Your focal point could be a large piece of decorative furniture.

* You could build your design around a wall mural: A mural of a sensual tropical scene or restful garden could set the tone. You could even personalize your mural by having a favorite photograph - a romantic scene from your honeymoon, the towering oak tree that grew in the backyard of your childhood home - turned into an easy-to-install wallpaper mural.

To learn more about wallpaper murals and customizing your own mural, visit www.muralsyourway.com.

Courtesy of ARAcontent

Many of us have been hearing about the February 2009 digital TV transition for a long time now. With the date fast approaching, what does it mean for you and what are your plans for the TVs in your home?
According to the Federal Communications Commission, on February 17, 2009 all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital.

"If you use an antenna to receive broadcasts, you'll need to either replace your TV with a newer model or get a separate converter box to continue watching your television," says Maria Repole, Assistant Vice President of Corporate Communications at Toshiba America Consumer Products. "Those who subscribe to a cable or satellite service should check with their provider to make sure they are using updated digital equipment."

For many people, the digital TV transition is an opportunity to take inventory of the TVs in your home and update some outdated equipment. Whether you need to replace the TV in your living room or those dated, smaller TVs in the bedroom or kitchen, many people are looking for deals and want to replace that 19-inch TV they've been watching for the last couple decades.

One option to consider is an LCD TV with a built-in DVD player -- a perfect option when replacing your TV sets. Instead of being left with an obsolete and unattractive model, you're investing in one that is designed to accent any room in your home.

Toshiba makes a range of smaller, space-saving TVs that are great choices for the digital transition. The models have built-in digital tuners that work for standard cable channels as well as off-air digital broadcasts. When the digital transition arrives, you won't have to worry.

But perhaps the best feature of these smaller TVs is the built in DVD player that has easy-to-access control buttons in a convenient all-in-one space saving design. The flat screen and slim body make it a great option if you need a smaller TV; choose a glossy white finish for the kitchen and a sleek black color for the bedroom.

The February 2009 digital TV transition is a good thing. DTV enables broadcasters to offer television with better picture and sound quality. And now that you are prepared and have options for every TV throughout your home, you'll be ready to enjoy a superior TV viewing experience.

For more information visit www.tacp.toshiba.com.
