<a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=mini-blinds/window-blinds/"">Mini Blinds, also known as micro blinds or venetian blinds, are the most common type of window blinds used in both traditional and modern decor. Most of your classrooms, offices, and apartments are all furnished with mini blinds. The reason for their popularity is the cost efficiency factor. Mini Blinds are available for low, economical prices while also being extremely durable and long lasting. Basically, when it comes to mini blinds you will get your money's worth and much more.

<a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=mini-blinds/pvc-vinyl/window-blinds/"">Plastic mini blinds and <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=aluminum/mini-blinds/window-blinds/"">metal mini blinds are generally the standard materials utilized from the leading window treatment manufacturers. These materials are strong and easy to clean which is why they are long lasting and practical. Owners of apartment buildings and offices as well as school who are less concerned with elegant style and are looking for practical window treatments will often choose <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=blindsgalore/mini-blinds/window-blinds/">inexpensive mini blinds.

Although the value of mini blinds mainly lies within their function, the style is still preferred by many consumers. With smaller slat sizes, mini blinds create a significant amount of clean horizontal lines that give the window a clean, sleek appearance. In addition to the visual effect, mini blinds are available in a wide variety of colors which contributes to their versatile use. For example, many leading manufacturers offer <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=mini-blinds/red-pink/window-blinds/"">red mini blinds and <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=gray-black/mini-blinds/window-blinds/"">black mini blinds which are not very common window treatments colors.

The most popular size of mini blinds are the <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=mini-blinds/slats-1-in/window-blinds/"">1 inch mini blinds, also known as 1 mini blinds. They are also offered in ½", 1 3/8", and 2 inch slat sizes. One inch mini blinds well for most average sized windows and sliding glass doors. For sliding glass doors and French doors you will need window treatments that will not interfere with the operation of the handle. If you are looking for <a href=""" products.asp?id="french-doors/"" www.blindsgalore.com http:>door mini blinds, consider ½" mini blinds for their convenient operation and sleek profile that will not hinder the use of the door handle.

Overall, mini blinds are great for large buildings that require efficiency with clean style for an affordable price. They are available in several styles and many colors from all the top brands. As a versatile solution, mini blinds are also well suited for sliding patio doors and French doors. Any window will benefit from the application of horizontal mini window blinds.

Outdoor shades, also called sun shades, can significantly reduce cooling costs inside your home as well as create a more pleasant outdoor atmosphere for your patio, deck or sunroom. In very hot climates, people also use outdoor shades on their sun-facing windows. Exterior shades offer numerous benefits:

Lower cooling costs

They can help to block damaging UV rays and reduce glare without sacrificing views

When used on windows, allow you to keep the window open for ventilation

Dress up the look of a patio

Provide additional privacy

You can purchase <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=outdoor-shades/window-shades/"">outdoor shades in many retail stores as well as online. They range in quality and price from the cheap plastic ones you can pick up at the Home Depot that'll last for a couple years max, to high-quality exterior sun shades, like Coolaroo, which will last for many years.

The other nice thing about the higher-quality outdoor shades is they are usually made to order, so they will fit exactly. <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/products.asp?id=outdoor-shades/window-shades/"">Coolaroo shades, for example, are available in two opacities, 8% and 20%. The 8% openness outdoor shades block more light (allows in 8% of incoming light). The 20% openness outdoor shades allow in more light for greater view-through. Coolaroo makes two version of their exterior shades: the <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/WindowProduct.asp?id=420002"">Coolaroo designer series and the <a href=""http://www.blindsgalore.com/WindowProduct.asp?id=420001"">Coolaroo premier series.

The Designer sun shades provide 20-25% heat reduction by blocking 92% of UV rays and 75% of sunlight. The Premier Series solar screen material provides 15% heat reduction by blocking 80% of UV rays and 66% of sunlight.. So, depending on how intense the sun is in your part of the world, you can make the right choice.

...is very durable. In most homes the kitchen is the epicenter of the house where everyone spends the majority of their time and where guests are entertained. Along with the constant foot traffic, the kitchen is also a place where food is cooked and consumed. This leads to mess as well as heat and moisture created during the cooking process. Your kitchen blinds must be able to stand up to these harsh elements while still providing the style and functionality you desire.

For maximum durability you will want to choose a blind rather than a shade, especially for windows above the sink. The reason for this is the fabric of a shade may be stained by food or ruined by the heat and moisture created in a kitchen. There are several types of blinds that are perfect for kitchen windows including faux wood blinds, mini blinds, and vertical blinds. All of these are made from aluminum, PVC, and plastic materials which are durable and very easy to clean. They will never warp from moisture, heat, or be stained by food.

Another factor to consider is the functionality of the kitchen blind or shade. For windows over counters or sinks you will want to avoid having dangling cords. These cords will be a hazard with the possibility of getting caught in your appliances and portray a sloppy appearance. Blinds often come with a continuous cordless loop or a wand to avoid messy dangling cords. Another more expensive option is motorization which requires the use of a remote control. If the window you are decorating is not above the sink you can use a shade with a cordless lift system. Examples would be either a roller shade or a cellular shade, which are both operated by gently pulling on the bottom rail to adjust the shade.

As with any window treatment, you must think about how much light control and privacy you require. However, in the kitchen you will most likely be more concerned with ventilation. Blinds with adjustable slats provide great ventilation as do shades with sheer materials and the ability to be opened completely.

Finally, when choosing your kitchen window coverings you must also account for style. As mentioned earlier, if a window is not above a sink you might consider using a shade which can add great color and elegance to your kitchen. If you have wood blinds in the rest of your home and are concerned with matching them, faux wood blinds are a great solution. They will not warp in the kitchen and they still have the look of real wood blinds. Style is something that should never be sacrificed when buying a kitchen blind or a kitchen shade.

In conclusion, there are several factors to use as criteria for which kitchen window treatments you choose to purchase. These are durability, light control, privacy, ventilation, and style. Once you have run through this checklist you are officially ready to make a wise shopping decision for your brand new kitchen blinds.

For inspiration, look no further than the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), which recently shared its top 2010 kitchen and bath trends.

To compile the findings and determine the latest kitchen and bath trends, the organization surveyed those members who designed a kitchen or bathroom during the last quarter of 2009. According to NKBA, the top 10 trends for 2010 are:

1. Shaker style kitchen design
2. Maple and alder cabinetry finishes
3. Quartz countertops
4. Pull-down/pull-out kitchen faucets
5. Polished chrome finishes
6. Under-counter refrigerator drawers
7. Dishwasher drawers for small loads
8. Marble vanity tops
9. Integrated sink tops, drop-in sinks, vessel sinks and pedestal sinks
10. Bronze and stainless steel finishes

In the kitchen
Making a big statement throughout the kitchen in 2010 is the addition of functional drawer appliances. One such example, which has been specified by nearly a third of NKBA's kitchen designers, is modern refrigeration technology. Turning convenience into a luxury, under-counter refrigerated drawers feature adjustable horizontal and vertical dividers to keep frequently used items close at hand. Perfect for the ultimate entertainer, refrigerated drawers are quite roomy, typically tall enough to store a 2-liter bottle and wide enough to hold items such as serving trays and pizza boxes.

If you're tired of running the dishwasher when it's only half-full, consider installing a dishwasher drawer. Because it's independently operated, you can wash small loads as economically as large ones. Plus, the extra flexibility to run cycles simultaneously with your traditional dishwasher makes clean-up quicker and easier, explaining why nearly a third of designers are incorporating this new trend into kitchens, as well.

Another popular element to include in the kitchen in 2010 is a pull-down or pull-out faucet. Utilized by 85 percent of kitchen designers, it's an easy way to make a design statement at the kitchen sink while increasing functionality. The new Arbor pull-down kitchen faucet from Moen seamlessly brings simple sophistication to the kitchen with its transitional styling that complements virtually any decor. It's available in a chrome finish, which is another 2010 trend to look for in appliances, accents and hardware throughout the entire kitchen. For more information about the Arbor pull-down kitchen faucet from Moen, visit moen.com or call (800) BUY-MOEN (800-289-6636).

In the bath
Granite is the dominant material chosen for vanities in current remodels - used by seven of every eight designers - however, in 2010 alternative natural materials, like marble, will continue to grow in popularity.

According to NKBA, just under half of bathroom designers utilize marble, as it provides a sophisticated look that's reminiscent of Roman baths with its regal, refined detail that exudes a sense of luxury. Plus, marble countertops provide a stain-resistant, water-resistant, rugged and durable surface - ideal for child-friendly bathrooms or homes with just one bathroom that see a lot of traffic throughout the day.

NKBA also forecasts that integrated sink tops will be a popular choice this year, as you can easily use existing items to achieve this look. By adding a sink into an antique dresser or chest, designers are creating one-of-a-kind vanities for nearly 30 percent of all clients.

Polished chrome finishes are another bathroom design trend for 2010. Look to incorporate this chic metal accent into all your hardware by updating the accessories in your bath, as well. You'll be able to make a big impact with small updates like new towel bars and robe hooks, for a completely coordinated look.
We've all seen the do-it-yourself paint job gone wrong, with thin spots, drips and streaks. Paint, however, isn't usually the culprit of a bad paint job. But cutting corners while prepping a space is.
By following the right steps prior to painting, and using the right painting tools, you'll be sure to have a refreshed space that looks like it was painted by a professional.

Assess the situation
A major factor to consider when starting a new project is the condition of the walls and cleanliness of the surfaces you want to paint. Item number one on the pre-painting checklist is to inspect the wall. Any loose paint, holes or cracks should be fixed before priming, and especially before painting.

If your old paint is peeling, it prevents your new coat of primer, and eventually your new color, from adhering to the wall, resulting in cracks and continued peeling. Don't sabotage your makeover before it even begins. Scrape away old paint until all the loose material is gone.

To get the job done like a professional, you'll need a quality scraper, like those from Purdy, makers of professional quality painting tools. These scrapers have been engineered with input and direction from professionals to ensure a product that delivers a superior performance. The high-quality line of scrapers, including the 2 1/2-inch carbide scraper, features ergonomically designed handles to make prep work less cumbersome and more comfortable.

Clean, patch and prime
After you're done scraping, you need to clean the wall. Any dirt left on the wall can create problems, causing the paint to peel or in some cases, slide right off. Using a good grease-cutting detergent will remove most of this unwanted material from the surface.

Once the wall is properly cleaned, the next step is to patch any flaws before priming and painting. And most importantly, when patching any surface, make sure to use the proper patching materials and tools. Be sure to match the repairing material to the surface and assess the amount of damage. Use wood filler to patch wood imperfections and spackling for drywall.

And remember, quality tools count
The quality of the tools used is going to affect the final finish. Just like brushes or roller covers, a cheap prep tool can bring down the quality of your entire project. Brushes that shed or rollers that leave lint should be avoided, as they'll ruin the look of your finished products. Scrapers made of cheap metal will leave rust marks on your walls, ruining all your hard work and doing as much damage as good. You'll be sure to get the desired results when using high-quality tools. Plus, a set of good painting tools will last longer and perform better over a longer period of time, saving you money and time. Purdy has a number of products to help you complete any part of the painting process, from start to finish.

A chain is only as good as its weakest link, and the same is true when undertaking a painting project. By forgetting to do any of the steps in the pre-painting process, you're putting your entire project at risk to fail. Instead, ensure your success with a little forethought and elbow grease, and you'll have a perfect finish each time. With weather warming up after the long winter, it's time to get back outside and start working in the yard again. Before you fire up the mower for the first cut, it's important to prepare the unit with a few maintenance steps.

"If you didn't properly winterize your mower last year, it's important to spend time at the start of the season with your equipment," says Jessica Gardner of MTD Products Inc, a global manufacturer of outdoor power equipment. "This will prevent many common malfunctions, keep it running better, and help prolong the life of the mower."

MTD suggests five simple steps to help prepare your mower for its first run of the season.

Clean the mower deck. It's important to clean the grass and debris buildup from under the mower deck and on the cutting blades at frequent intervals in order to prevent clogging and to improve cutting performance. Do not use sharp instruments to clean the deck, always wear safety glasses, and make sure the spark plug wire is removed from the spark plug before performing any maintenance.

Change the air filter and oil. In order for your mower to run at its optimum level, you must change the oil and air filter once a year.

Replace or clean spark plugs. Your spark plugs should be replaced when you notice rust forming around them; however it's important to clean them on a regular basis. If you don't replace or clean the spark plugs, the mower will not function properly.

Sharpen or replace mower blades. In order to get the best cut possible, sharpen or replace the blades. You can use a metal file to sharpen blades, but if you're uncomfortable doing it yourself, take it to your local hardware store.

Use fresh gas and fuel stabilizer. Old gas can clog the engine, which can cause major system damage to your mower. Be sure to use up or empty gas at the end of the season and start with a fresh tank every 30 days. Always use a minimum of 87 octane gas with no more than 10 percent ethanol and add fuel stabilizer to your gas can at every refill to protect your mower from problems that can be caused by today's ethanol-blended fuels.

"Just a simple tune-up at the beginning of the season can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 percent and emissions by up to 50 percent," says Gardner. "These few simple steps will keep your mower running at peak performance season after season."

Now that the mower is ready to use, here are a few more tips to help your green thumb jump-start into spring.

Clean your yard of debris. After all the snow has melted and your lawn is dry, rake your yard to get rid of the dead growth, stray leaves, twigs and winter debris, so the grass can grow more easily.

Weed away. Try to spot weeds early, as they grow more vigorously at the beginning of spring.

Create a planting checklist. Check which flowers grow best in your soil and weather conditions. Make sure the timing is right as most annuals don't tolerate frost well, but it's also usually bestto plant as early as possible to ensure successful growth.

Repair cracks to fences or pathways. Repair any cracks or damage to your fences or pathways that might have developed during the winter. Also, if your fence needs repainting, do it before the summer heat hits.

Sharpen tools. Make sure to sharpen your gardening tools because, like your mower blades, they get dull during the course of the year. To sharpen, add clean oil, such as vegetable oil, to a bucket of sand and stick the sharp end of your tools in and out of the bucket several times.
Avocado and harvest gold bring back memories of the 70s - but what colors will spring and summer of 2010 bring to our homes?

"As the economy continues to work its way out of a recession, there will be less spending on new items and more repurposing of existing items throughout the home," says Donna Schroeder of spray paint manufacturer Krylon. "A great way to breathe new life into these old objects is with spray paint in one of the year's hottest colors."

Nature, collections, senses and symbols will be the drivers for paint trends in 2010, says Schroeder. These main drivers are interconnected, allowing each trend to blend into the other to create a cohesive look and feel throughout your space. The four stylish color themes found in the 2010 trend palette are:

Sense
Whether you prefer scented candles, dim lighting or cozy rugs to accent your home, stimulating all the senses is a key style component in 2010. Comprised of soft colors, the sense trend will swaddle and soothe the soul. It engages all five senses as it mixes textures, scents and patterns throughout the home. This trend also focuses on the details, allowing you to make a statement with even the smallest elements. Colors in the sense palette include Pacific Purple, Morning Mist, Hyacinth, Celery, Jade and Sand.

Nurture
As concern for the environment continues to play a large role in home design and decorating, homeowners are shifting toward smaller spaces. They're also buying less and repurposing more. To complement this eco-consciousness and the shrinking of carbon footprints, indoor design and decor trends continue to be reminiscent of the outdoors. Bring the beauty and wonder of the environment into your home with colors found in natural elements. Colors in the nurture palette include Fern, Meringue, Terra Cotta, River Rock, Mountain View and Cloud.

Symbol
A love of architectural shapes and details from the past help fuel the trend of symbols in 2010. Moody and complex colors are integral to this palette, allowing design elements from yesteryear to resurface in modern-day homes. Look for accents with a historical look and feel to complement the dramatic hues and elegant feel of this trend. Spray paint colors in the symbol palette include Almond, Cherry Red, Navy, Ivy Leaf, Leather Brown and Castle Rock.

Sojourn
The beauty and wonder from across the world can be a great place to derive inspiration for your home. By combining meaningful objects from your personal travels with rich, globally inspired colors you can showcase your belongings as a masterful collection. This trend allows you to tell a story of your past travels and experiences through your home decor. Colors in the sojourn palette include Bahama Sea, Burgundy, Peek-a-boo Blue, Blonde Shimmer, Niagara Ivory Mist and Equestrian.

To learn more about color trends and how to choose the perfect color, visit www.krylon.com.

Selling your home should be an exciting time, but in some cases, might not be the experience you had hoped for. From the moment the property hits the open market, the clock starts ticking as to how many days before it is sold. However, auction sales are a growing trend to move the properties swiftly, albeit there are pros and cons attached. Selling a home on the auction block has been a successful strategy for homeowners who need to have a quick sale and are somewhat flexible with the final sale price. And although selling at auction can move a property in three to four weeks, not every home owner will be content with selling at a discount.

If the auction option sounds like a viable resource for you, there are a few simple steps to better prepare yourself for this novel venture, and help to ensure that you have made the right decision.

Tips For Sellers:

1. Profit Margins.

The first question to answer is how much money is the minimum you may accept for the property to pay off the mortgage. In some cases, the auction price may fall short, leaving the seller with a deficit to be paid to the lender. However, in the case of older homes or those with plenty of equity, the auction selling price is much more flexible.

2. Calculate The Fees.

An auction house will generally take a percentage of the total sale price of the property. Fees may range from six percent and upwards, so be sure to get the fee in writing and crunch the numbers in a variety of possible outcomes.

3. Choosing The Auction House.

Most major metropolis areas have quality auction blocks that specialize in property. You will want to do your research and get the best company that spends money on its advertising and is well known in the community for fast sales.

4. Absolute Auctions.

There are two roads to travel when you wish to sell your property on the auction block. The absolute auction is a process where the property will be sold to the highest bidder. This type of auction is a sure fire way to move the property with speed. However, the downside is that the seller must take what was offered on the home, a maneuver that can be risky to sellers who need a specified amount to satisfy the mortgage.

5. Minimum Bid Auctions.

This type of property auction has a reserve price, or minimum bid that will be accepted by the seller. And although the price is fixed to where it cannot fall below the minimum, a good auction house may be able to raise the selling price for you. This type of auction works well for properties with little equity and gives the seller greater control of the outcome.

Tips For Buyers:

6. Get Your Lending Docs In Order.

Buying a home at an auction is a great way to say thousands, and you want to be ready to go as soon as possible. So be sure to get all your lending documentation in order before you attend the auction.

7. Previews.

There is a little leg work involved when buying a home at auction. Some auction houses hold a preview of the property, which every savvy buyer will take advantage of. However, in some cases, it is not possible to enter the property for a look around. In such cases, be sure you do a drive-by and perform the property observations from the street.

8. Priority List.

Yes, auctions are fun, but you must be sure that you do not get caught up in the excitement and lose your train of thought. The best way to stay focused is to make a list of all the properties that you are interested in and rank them in order of their importance. List the features that attract you and set yourself a firm budget for each home. Property description lists make the auction process neat and clean with no mistakes.

9. You''re The Winner.

When the auction process becomes fast and furious, its easy to get carried away and make a bid that you did not intend to commit to. In most cases, its a bid over budget, so be mindful that your bid is legally binding. If you are declared the winner, it cannot be retracted, even if you have made a mistake. So be sure to stay focused and let nothing sway you from your game plan.

10. Mortgage Paperwork.

Once you have won the bid for the property, be sure to contact your lender immediately and get the lending papers in order. You are legally responsible for the winning bid and must move quickly to satisfy the financial matters.

No matter how cold it might get in your neck of the woods, there's no reason to go into home improvement hibernation during the winter. Home remodeling is a year round business these days, and home contractors are available to help you prepare for the cold season, plan for springtime projects, and make the most of those frigid days indoors. That could mean setting up the ultimate holiday lighting display, or getting to work on a major, home interior project. In winter, basement remodeling, as well as bathroom and kitchen remodeling, are becoming increasingly popular ways for home owners to invest in their property and stay active and productive. With the help of modern technology and a knowledgeable contractor, winter home improvement is becoming quite the extensive field, as the following list of potential wintertime projects shows:

1. Getting Warmer: Winter Roofing, Siding, and More
Before you can make winter your time of home improvement productivity, you have to first make sure that your home is safe from the onslaught of winter itself. Harsh winds, ice, snow, and especially cold temperatures can pose very real threats to your home, and more importantly, the people in it. That's why it's usually wise to bring in home contractors to inspect areas of your home that are essential to your protection and heating during the winter.

Roofing contractors and gutter repair and gutter installation specialists are excellent professionals to call on to make sure your home is protected from the elements overhead. Missing shingles and leaks in the roof or gutters can become a huge problem as the weather changes, so roof repair is vitally important. to have these checked out and repaired right away.

Frozen pipes are another common winter catastrophe, which is why plumbing contractors often specialize in methods for keeping drain pipes heated and insulated. It's important to keep your entire home well insulated too, in order to keep warm air in and cold air out. You can purchase and install insulation yourself in especially vulnerable rooms like the attic, or you can call on a window contractor, electrical contractor, siding contractor, or other specialists to guarantee that your home is well sealed.

Finally, don't forget to have your electrical contractor check your furnace and power systems every year. You'll thank yourself when those first blistery days of December find their way to your neighborhood.

2. Say No to Snow: Snow removal contractors
You can't make it stop snowing, of course, especially if you live in cities like Chicago, Boston, and New York. Snow removal contractors, as well as modern technological options, do make snow and ice removal far easier than at any point in the past, however. A heated driveway is one popular choice many people have installed these days. It is certainly preferable to hours of shoveling. There are also special heating products and chemical solutions that help melt snow and keep your home from getting buried, many of which are now widely available commercially.

3. Winter Remodeling
Once you've set up your home as a heated, protected fortress, why not take advantage of your comfortable surroundings and set your sights on some wintertime home remodeling? A kitchen remodeling contractor or bathroom contractor is happy to help you get your project going in the winter. Basement remodeling is also a great undertaking for the so-called off-season, when you might have less competition at the hardware store, and more time on your hands to plan that new basement or even a home theatre of your dreams. A basement contractor general contractor can advise you on cold weather building procedures, and how to avoid potential winter related delays in your project.

4. Getting In the Spirit: Home Decorations!
In terms of a more aesthetic form of temporary home improvement, holiday decorations certainly can bring a lot of joy to home owners and their neighbors, as well. Sometimes, holiday decoration designs come down to a matter of quality versus quantity. But tastefulness is just part of the equation. It's also important to consider your safety when stringing up lights or putting that plastic Santa Claus on your roof. Always make sure you have someone there to help you, and don't hesitate to call on an expert, such as an electrical contractor, to help you strategize the most effective means of setting up your display and lighting system.

5. Plan for Spring Home Improvements!
Lastly, if you're the type of person who'd rather stay bundled up in a blanket with a cup of cocoa during winter, home remodeling contractors are still available to start helping you gameplan your big home improvement project for the spring or summer. There's no better time of the year to collect your thoughts, develop a concept, and put the plans in order for a kitchen remodeling or bathroom renovation project than winter. Then, when the warm weather does come back around, you'll be thoroughly prepared to tackle your project. It's kind of like a grizzly bear charging out of his cave in the spring, only you won't be anywhere near as hungry.

With more Americans downsizing their household budgets, larger-scale renovation projects are out and frugal remodeling is in. And when it comes to saving money, experts say home improvement projects that increase energy efficiency are among the best investments to deliver paybacks -- now and in the future.
The average return on investment for midrange home improvement projects focused on aesthetic appeal, such as kitchen or bathroom remodels, is down since 2007, according to "Remodeling" magazine.

"Energy efficiency upgrades provide homeowners with the rare opportunity to see a return on their investment almost immediately and at resale," says Kateri Callahan, president of the Alliance to Save Energy, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit dedicated to promoting energy efficiency. "We can't always predict how the market will impact home prices over the long term, but all homeowners can improve their home's energy efficiency to increase its value."

Heating and cooling can account for nearly half of a home's energy bill, according to the Alliance to Save Energy, and with temperatures dropping, it's the right time for homeowners to focus on ways they can trim costs and energy consumption.

"The reality of the new economy is that homeowners want to save money while maintaining the value and comfort of their homes," says Mike Lawrence, vice president and general manager of Insulation Systems for Johns Manville, a manufacturer of building products. "There are economical and smart steps homeowners can take that will positively impact their monthly energy bills today and their home's value tomorrow."

Homeowners can tackle projects that are low in cost and high in value and return on investment, either as do-it-yourself projects or by hiring a professional contractor.

To get started, homeowners should first estimate the current performance of their home by using an online energy efficiency assessment tool, such as the Home Energy Analysis test available at JMHomeowner.com. Online assessments help gauge the savings that could be realized by making efficiency upgrades.

"After evaluating their home, most homeowners will find that adding insulation to their attic is a smart and cost-effective first step, since most homes are under-insulated," Lawrence says. "When adding insulation, homeowners should also consider weatherizing their attic to help eliminate any holes or gaps that may exist in the floor or walls. By using caulk, spray foam or weather stripping to close such gaps, homeowners can further decrease wasted energy."

A programmable thermostat is another cost-effective option that helps boost home energy efficiency. Programmable thermostats let homeowners regulate the temperature of their home to deliver savings without sacrificing comfort. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings.

A triple return on your remodeling investment

Compared to other home improvement projects, energy efficiency upgrades typically come with a considerably smaller price tag, compared to aesthetic-focused renovations like kitchen and bathroom remodels. In addition, there's a triple return on these remodeling investments over the course of home ownership:

* Save on your energy bill today: According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), with a properly air sealed and insulated home, homeowners can reduce their heating and cooling costs by as much as 30 percent. The average U.S. home needs 19 inches of attic insulation for maximum energy efficiency.

* Save up to $1,500 with a tax credit: Through 2010, insulation purchases qualify for a 30 percent federal tax credit for energy-efficiency improvements, which reimburses homeowners up to $1,500 for the cost of materials. Additional incentives from adding insulation or making other energy efficiency improvements may be available from state and local governments and utilities.

* Save for the long term: Investments made in home energy efficiency pay dividends for the lifetime of a home and improve the home's resale value. According to the Appraisal Institute, for every dollar saved in annual utility costs, homeowners can expect to add $20 to their home's market value.

For more information on energy efficient home improvement projects and to take advantage of local incentives, visit www.jmhomeowner.com/insulation/energytaxcredit.asp.
While these heat sources can help reduce energy bills and keep homes warmer, experts say users should be aware of - and take steps to mitigate - potential fire and carbon monoxide risks.

"Space heaters and other alternative heating solutions offer cost-effective ways to keep your family warm throughout the winter without heating the whole house, allowing you to lower your thermostat to reduce your energy bills," says Eric Sowder, senior vice president of home improvement retailer Lowe's. "Many products have built-in safety features like automatic shutoffs, anti-tipping devices and heat guards, but be sure to follow all manufacturers' instructions for use and placement of heating devices to avoid serious home injuries and help you rest easy throughout the winter."

About 67 percent of American households use fuel-burning appliances and equipment during the winter months, according to a report by the nonprofit Home Safety Council. Yet 59 percent have not installed a carbon monoxide detector, and many others that do have CO detectors fail to replace missing or dead batteries, the council reports.

"Fires caused by heating appliances overtake cooking fires as the leading cause of home fires in January and February, and CO risks also rise with the use of alternative heating sources," says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council.

Before you begin using a space heater, make sure you've accomplished these basic energy-saving steps first. Sowder advises:

* Improve insulation. Adding insulation and sealing air drafts can trim up to 20 percent off your heating costs.

* Installing a programmable thermostat can save you around $180 per year when used correctly to automatically lower the temperature when you're out of the house.

* Thermal window curtains, like the Eclipse brand available at Lowe's, can save up to 25 percent on heating and cooling bills, block 99 percent of light and reduce noise up to 40 percent.

When using a supplemental heat source to save energy and money this winter, follow this advice from the Home Safety Council and Lowe's to prevent fire and CO dangers:

Reduce fire risk from space heaters

* Be sure your space heater has been tested for safety. A label on the bottom will indicate if it's been tested by an independent agency - look for the initials ETL, UL or CSA.

* Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, including furniture, people, pets and curtains. An adult should always be present in the room when a space heater is running.

* Turn heaters off before you leave a room or go to sleep.

* Heaters should never be used to dry clothing or blankets.

Minimize CO threats

* Place at least one CO alarm in your home near sleeping areas.

* Have your home's central heating system inspected, cleaned and tuned by a trained professional who knows how to repair leaks and other problems.

* Be sure gas appliances like stoves and clothes dryers are properly adjusted and serviced.

* Never turn on the gas cooking range in an effort to heat your home.

* Don't use a gas or charcoal grill inside the house or in a closed garage.

Fireplace and wood stove safety

* Never burn trash, cardboard boxes or Christmas trees in your fireplace or wood stove; they burn unevenly and may contain poisons or cause a fire. Only burn seasoned hardwood, like oak, ash or maple in your fireplace or wood-burning stove.

* Get your chimney inspected and cleaned every year by a professional chimney sweep.

* Before you use the fireplace, be sure to open the flue and keep embers inside fireplaces with sturdy screens or glass doors.

To learn more about staying safe in your home during the winter, visit www.mysafehome.org. Even some so-called natural cleansers can contain these same or similar nasty ingredients. And you would know this only if the manufacturer practices full disclosure of ingredients on their labels, which is not required on home care products. Think about it - when was the last time you saw a full ingredient listing on your spray cleaner?

The best way to make sure your living space is clean and healthy is to use safe, natural cleaning products you create yourself, using natural and inexpensive ingredients you can pick up at any natural grocery store. Here are a few "classic" homecare essential oils suggested by the experts at the leading aromatherapy company, Aura Cacia: lemon (clean, sweet, uplifting scent; deodorizing), peppermint (minty, fresh; air purifier; mild pest repellent), eucalyptus and tea tree (air and surface sanitizers; fresh, therapeutic aromas).

Here's a shopping list of key ingredients for making your own homecare products:

* Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) - Gently abrasive scouring powder, odor absorber and an excellent base for making your own cleaning preparations.
* Washing soda (Sodium Carbonate)
* Borax (Sodium Borate) - Natural mineral compound, laundry booster, multipurpose cleanser, fungicide/insecticide.
* White distilled vinegar (Acetic Acid)
* Liquid soap (Sodium Hydroxide) - Choose from vegetable oil-based soaps such as olive oil or sweet almond.
* Distilled water - Clean, distilled water acts as a better carrier and dirt solvent. Tap water will often contain salts and minerals that can lead to spotting and build-up.
* Essential oils
* Spray bottles
* Natural bristle scrubbing brushes
* Squeeze bottles
* Cotton dusting cloth
* Hemp or jute fiber scrubbing cloth
* Tote to put it all in

Follow these simple recipes for making your own basic homecare products:

Basic Spray Cleaner
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon sodium borate
1/4 teaspoon liquid soap
36 drops essential oil*

*Cleansing and purifying essential oils: lemon, tea tree, eucalyptus, spike lavender.

Gentle Scouring Cream
1/2 cup baking soda
Liquid soap
18 drops essential oil*

*Oils that brighten: lemon, lemongrass, grapefruit.

Add essential oils to baking soda and blend. Home siding is one of the biggest home improvement projects which directly impacts on the value and appearance of your home while delivering energy and noise insulation efficiencies. There are numerous siding solutions on the market and they provide a wide variety of choice in style and appearance, cost, ease of installation, maintenance and energy and cost-saving efficiency.

The best siding variant to use when you are looking to maximize the cost-savings from reducing energy consumption
and improve your thermal and noise insulation performance of your home are stucco and vinyl siding.

Originally, vinyl siding panels came with a separate foam insulation backing, but modern vinyl siding solutions are integrated to ease installation and reduce costs further. Integrated vinyl siding panels are much more energy efficient as well.

Stucco siding also provides comparable thermal insulation efficiencies however, vinyl siding is considerably cheaper and simpler to install for home-owners. Stucco siding has undergone a design and production transformation in much the same way as vinyl siding, with modern stucco installations able to trap pockets of air which as an insulating barrier against both cold and hot temperatures.

Stone and cement fiber siding provide the lowest thermal insulation benefits; both these forms of siding have significant benefits to offer, however if you are are looking to improve thermal insulation and energy efficiency of your home, they are not viable alternatives for your home improvement project. Stone and cement fiber siding simply do not trap pockets of air to the extent where it can act as an effective thermal insulator, however they are low cost, low maintenance and extremely strong and durable.

Aluminum siding also offers very low thermal protection and insulation and its efficiency varies in direct proportion to the external temperature. In cold weather, aluminum siding will act as an effective conductor of your heat from inside the home to the colder exterior - as a metal it is an extremely good thermal conductor which is the direct opposite of an insulator! Homes using aluminum siding tend to be cold in winter or produce high heating costs for their owners, though there are insulated aluminum siding panels which can be used but this simply increases the cost of the installation and still does not render them as effective as vinyl or stucco siding solutions.

When a home-owner includes cost-effectiveness in with thermal insulation effectiveness, then there is one clear winner

We all want the finer things in life, but while many of us have expensive tastes, we don't always have lavish budgets. And, when it comes to updating the kitchen, many items can have large price tags that - in today's market - we won't be able to recoup. Luckily, with a little creativity you can achieve a cost-conscious kitchen remodel that gives you maximum enjoyment on a minimal budget.

Finished look for less
Does your kitchen have shiny brass light fixtures? If so, updating these can instantly make your home look more current and stylish. Home improvement retailers offer a wide variety of stylish and affordable choices in popular finishes, such as stainless steel or old world bronze. Or, for an even more economical choice, turn your current lighting fixtures from brass to beautiful by spray painting them with a new contemporary finish. Manufacturers such as Krylon offer unique choices, like Stainless Steel or Oil-Rubbed Bronze, that add beautiful texture for a high-end look.

Fashionable, functional focal point
Most kitchens have a basic faucet - but as the focal point and most-used item in the kitchen, updating this mainstay can create a functional and fashionable change that everyone will notice.

When selecting a new kitchen faucet, look for a high-arc style with pulldown functionality. Models such as the Moen Anabelle Eco-Performance faucet feature this unique design - with the added benefit of up to 32 percent water savings. The multi-function wand offers both a fast-fill stream for filling pots, as well as two Eco-Performance sprays that conserve water while allowing you to complete everyday tasks such as washing dishes or preparing foods - all with the same great performance. Available at Lowe's in both Stainless Steel and Mediterranean Bronze finishes, this kitchen update will have you saying "wow" with the aesthetic, functional and water-saving benefits. For more information on Moen Eco-Performance kitchen faucets, visit moen.com or lowes.com.

Sensational shelves
Nothing can make a kitchen look worse than cluttered countertops. But when it comes to storing necessities or displaying decorative items - there often is no other spot. While adding new cabinetry can solve your storage issue, it can be costly. Instead, build exposed shelves to give your kitchen a more updated look and an open, airy feel.

Home improvement retailers offer a variety of pre-made wood shelving in a variety of materials and finishes, or, if you are handy, you can build your own to save even more. Once they are complete, utilize them for a mix of decorative and functional kitchen items and be sure to keep everything neat and clean for a polished look.

Breathtaking backsplash
Adding ceramic tile in your kitchen can add color, texture and a high-end appearance, but upgrading your entire floor or countertops can be very pricey. Instead, adding a tile backsplash can make a dramatic change - with minimal cost and effort. Whether you're an experienced do-it-yourselfer or not, there are many online step-by-step guides, and many home improvement retailers offer classes for this simple project. And, in no time at all, you'll have a beautiful tile masterpiece that will accent - and protect - your walls.

With these few updates, your kitchen will look great and be more functional - all without breaking the bank.

Courtesy of ARAcontent

A clean windshield is not only useful during rain, sleet and snow. How many times have you experienced a windshield that is smeared with insects, bird droppings, road tar or other messy deposits? Removing such dirt with worn wiper blades is nearly impossible. Usually, you wind up smearing the mess and obscuring your vision even more. If you change your blades regularly, you can avoid these problems and keep your eyes on the road.

Know when to Change Your Blades

Generally, a blade will show physical wear signs like cracking or discoloration. Another way to know is by the quality of the wipe. Streaking or un-wiped areas are a dead giveaway. In addition, if the blades make noise or chattering sounds, then they need to be replaced. However, if you change your blades frequently, you won't have to examine your blades looking for these signs of possible failure.

Blades can be easily damaged by snow scrapers and ice during the winter but the sun is just as damaging to a blade in the summer. By simply doing a little preventative maintenance, you can avoid these uncomfortable situations. Wiper blades should be treated the way you treat engine oil -- you don't wait until you have engine trouble before you change your oil.

How often should you replace your blades? The National Highway Transportation Board recommends that drivers change their wiper blades every year, however the average vehicle owner replaces his/her wiper blades only once every two and a half years. "Most people wait until they are in a downpour and nearly drive off the road before they are convinced it's time to change blades," says Jenifer Maddox, brand manager for PEAK Automotive Products. Some blades, such as Optix Wiper Blades, even come with simple connector systems that make installing the blades on any vehicle a snap.

So if you've been procrastinating about changing your windshield wiper blades, take a few minutes today to change them. You'll be glad you did when your windows are clear and dry this winter
