About this item: Although adorned with richly embossed aluminum textures, his features are stern. This handsome mask is the work of Sefah Mohammed. “These masks are used by the Busanga people of Northern Ghana,” he explains. “They use them to protect their groundnuts from people who intend to steal them. It is believed that when anyone goes into the farm with the intention of theft, the mask will arrest the person and he or she will be unable to move – caught with the groundnut in their hands.” About our Artist: ‘My work is very unique because I craft African masks of extremely high quality. Moreover, I have innovated some creativity into my art with local available resources, such as calabash and cowries,’ says Ghana’s Sefah Mohammed. ‘There are a lot of factors that motivate me but the significant one is to depict the uniqueness of African history for our younger generations. I have trained a lot of carvers who are still carving and making ends meet for their families.’Size: 18″ H x 5″ W x 2.4″ D
