Serving Veterans at Rock the Block
My husband, Jimmy and I recently had the amazing opportunity to partner with The Home Depot for their Rock the Block event. Rock the Block is a service campaign held in the spring led by The Home Depot Foundation. First time volunteers are invited to come and help boost curb-appeal for communities across the nation. These events help improve the lives of our veterans by beautifying and upgrading their homes.
Jimmy and I had an amazing experience partnering up with The Home Depot Foundation for a previous volunteer event during Veteran’s Day. We personally share The Home Depot’s passion in serving veterans. Jimmy’s father is a veteran, and I have close family members who are veterans so this is very near and dear to our hearts. The fact that The Home Depot Foundation has already invested more than $280 million in veteran causes is absolutely mind-blowing.
Before Getting Started
On the morning of the event, we drove to one of Atlanta’s historic westside neighborhoods where we, along with other volunteers, were assigned to one of ten homes. We worked alongside the local, non-profit partner HouseProud Atlanta.
The Home Depot makes it so much fun to volunteer because they’re super organized. They also provided us with all the supplies we needed to help improve the curb appeal of each home.
The Front Yard
One of our jobs was to plant flowers and create flower beds for the owners. I love gardening and appreciate the time that goes into making your yard look extra special. We had the honor of meeting the owners, Mr. and Mrs. J, and they were so extremely grateful for what everyone was doing. It’s the least we can do for those who have sacrificed so much to our country!
Mrs. J was incredibly thrilled by our work on her yard. It’s the little details that really make a house a home. Mrs. J loves flowers, and she was tickled to see us working to add a bunch to her front yard.
I love that the core values of The Home Depot are giving back and doing the right thing. Since veterans chose to serve us, it’s why we choose to serve and give back to them.
Before we immigrated to the United States, my uncle who was a veteran petitioned for my family to come. It was because of him and my aunt that my family was able to immigrate to this country. We are forever grateful to them. This is one of the main reasons why I am passionate about serving veterans. Our lives were personally changed by their actions on and off the battlefield.
The Backyard
Jimmy and I built a garden bed with materials provided by The Home Depot and planted some herbs for Mr. and Mrs. J right in their backyard.
The Fence
Along with creating beautiful flower beds, the volunteers got to work adding a fresh coat of paint to the fence. It’s truly amazing what paint can do! It helped elevate their yard and really brightened the overall space.
The Final Transformation
We had a great time getting to know the owners and thanked them for their service to our country. That was the cherry on top!
Mr. and Mrs. J. were so grateful. Thanks to The Home Depot Foundation for continuing to transform more than 40,000 homes and facilities for our veterans across the nation. We are so proud to partner with a company that gives back to our veterans and continues to leave a positive impact in our communities.
