I used basic pine 1 x 3 boards, 1 sheet of \u00be-in. plywood and 2 sheets of 48 x 48 underlayment.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Cut the plywood \u201cribs\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107910 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/4231ea16be4be48fca8eca48caf3c92f.jpg\" alt=\"Creating a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In order to draw a perfect quarter circle, I made a quick compass using a scrap piece of 1 x 2. I drilled a small hole for a nail at one end and two larger holes for a pencil 38 in. down the board and 42 in. down the board. I lightly nailed the board in place, and then drew my arc with the pencil.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107911 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/b862c3567867db54ca04abe328484c7d.jpg\" alt=\"Creating a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Ryobi-4-8-Amp-Variable-Speed-Orbital-Jig-Saw-JS481LG\/205105611?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD22%7C000000%7CCharlotteSmith%7C107909\">jigsaw<\/a>, I slowly cut out four arcs from my sheet of wood.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Create right angle supports for each arc<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107912 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2b7ccc3d2bb368ceb27380dc943be454.jpg\" alt=\"Creating a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107913 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/9df823ad3b76f6d8c769618756db0252.jpg\" alt=\"Creating a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids\" width=\"750\" height=\"1125\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Kreg-Jig-Pocket-Hole-System-R3\/202269070?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD22%7C000000%7CCharlotteSmith%7C107909\">pocket holes<\/a> to screw one 41 \u00bc-in. board into the 42-in. board at a 90 degree angle. Use pocket holes to screw each end of this corner angle into the quarter circle plywood arc. I started by connecting two of the arcs with the 12-in. 1 x 3s.\u00a0 Repeat with the remaining two arcs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107919 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/6e228bff752004ec8cafffa52975379d.jpg\" alt=\"Creating a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids\" width=\"750\" height=\"1125\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With everything lined up, I connected the two arc pieces with the three 12 \u00bd-in. boards. I had to stagger these middle pieces slightly in order to screw into the pine boards and not the plywood arcs.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 6: Add the underlayment roof<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107920 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/4fb3b3eec1aaeb33252f1e50885553b6-1.jpg\" alt=\"Creating a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/6823a54f12f5cc6ea081ab0f31609143-1.jpg\" alt=\"Creating a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Starting at the top corner, I lined up the first strip of underlayment with the edge. I used a 3\/8-in. bit to predrill two holes along each plywood rib. I finished by screwing the board in place with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/GRK-Fasteners-8-x-1-1-4-in-Star-Drive-Trim-Head-Finish-Trim-Screw-100-per-Pack-96055\/204837649?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD22%7C000000%7CCharlotteSmith%7C107909\">1 \u00bc-in. trim head screws<\/a> (these typically come with the necessary star bit). Because both are LED, I don\u2019t worry about the lights heating up and, needless to say, the kids love the effect of the changing rainbow lights!
