When\u00a0planning his new room, I wanted to come up with a new bed design that\u00a0also had storage but was a bit\u00a0more modern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">We are both really happy with the end result!<\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">I have built serval beds in my time and this was by far the simplest one to build.<\/p>\n<h3>Cut List<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Pine-Plywood-Common-23-32-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-0-688-in-x-48-in-x-96-in-799397\/202677224?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\"><strong>Plywood Sheets<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"textbox\">(2) 40 in. x 76 in. cuts<\/li>\n<li class=\"textbox\">(4) 40 in. x 7.875 in. cuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/1-in-x-4-in-x-8-ft-Premium-Kiln-Dried-Square-Edge-Whitewood-Common-Board-914681\/100023465?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\"><strong>1 x 4 boards<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"textbox\">(2) 37\u00a0\u00bd in. cuts<\/li>\n<li class=\"textbox\">(8) 40 in. cuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 1: Cut the plywood<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108712 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ed73888ffc47de232b016aceada06226.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">I had someone at The Home Depot cut the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Pine-Plywood-Common-23-32-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-0-688-in-x-48-in-x-96-in-799397\/202677224?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">plywood<\/a> there in the store, so it\u00a0would fit in my car better. Plus, it\u00a0saved me the time of pulling out the table saw at home. The 40 in. x 76 in. pieces will be the top\u00a0and bottom of the bed. The thin strip will become the center slats that separate the different cubbies.\u00a0Cut 4 pieces that are 40 in. long. The large scrap piece is extra. You\u00a0can save it for a future project.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Cover rough edges<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108713 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/a4510321846064b1929d722f03e7b657.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">Once the plywood pieces are all cut, use banding to cover the rough\u00a0edges. Use an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/BLACK-DECKER-ASO-Smart-Steam-Iron-F976\/206667193?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">iron<\/a> and follow the\u00a0directions on the package.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Trim excess<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108714 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/9932766285dbfe0572ba88aba184f9d8.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">Once all the banding it on, trim any excess with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Husky-Folding-Lock-Back-Utility-Knife-21113\/100020658?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">razorblade knife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Stain the Wood<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/7c8c348937ebc7fdfab6c5eef3dd808d.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">It is easier to stain the pieces before assembling them. I used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Minwax-8-oz-PolyShades-Classic-Black-Satin-1-Step-Stain-and-Polyurethane-4-Pack-213954444\/204223982?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">Classic Black from\u00a0Minwax<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Add cubby slats<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108716 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/af830697e1e311f8634a7652696f3b72.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Stanley-PowerLock-25-ft-Tape-Measure-33-425D\/100019154?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">Measure<\/a> and decide where you want the slat to go. You can have some cubbies smaller or they can all\u00a0be the same size. It is up to you.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108717 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/558ecf64206450a01ab6cb9d449e604b-1.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Ryobi-5-5-Amp-3-8-in-Variable-Speed-Drill-D43K\/205216326?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">drilled<\/a> pocket holes along the slats in order to screw them onto the top and bottom of the bed. Make\u00a0sure to stain the inside of the pocket holes as well so they are less noticeable. I do not fill them in case\u00a0we ever need to disassemble the bed to move it.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 6: Install the headboard<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108718 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/18a2d33158985c80cbfc2d4b0bb4410d-1.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"1125\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/1-in-x-4-in-x-8-ft-Premium-Kiln-Dried-Square-Edge-Whitewood-Common-Board-914681\/100023465?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">1 x 4 boards<\/a> that are 37.5 in. long get screwed into the back of\u00a0the bed vertically. These will be\u00a0what the\u00a040 in. 1 x 4 boards headboard slat get attached to. I screwed from the back, so\u00a0they were not\u00a0visible.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108719 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/7a49a7e6f935a0bf71bcf852a6cbda66-1.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"1110\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">I used pennies as spacers in between each slat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108696 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6b6a99bc72f3947cbcbff298074b6ae1.jpg\" alt=\"DIY Modern Bed with Storage\" width=\"750\" height=\"1125\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">To give it a bit more height, and to make it easier to access the cubbies on the other side, I added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Shepherd-2-in-Cast-Iron-Swivel-Plate-Caster-with-125-lb-Load-Rating-9174\/100194307?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CStacyRisenmay%7C108693\">2 in. all metal casters<\/a>.
