Everyone has an old piece of furniture in their home that they wish they could revive. Monica Chavez of House of Esperanza<\/span><\/a> shows us how to take an antique piece of furniture and refinish it using Varathane Premium interior wood stain.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Hi everyone! Monica Chavez here with a super simple furniture refinishing project.<\/p>\n

I have a collection of vintage and antique sewing machines with tables accumulating in my furniture hoard pile. It was time we brought one in for a refresh.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

We decided to give new life to a tall and narrow sewing table using Varathane Premium interior wood stain<\/span><\/a> from The Home Depot.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

This sewing table in particular was found at an estate sale for $5!\u00a0 <\/span>FIVE DOLLARS.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

This piece needed lots of attention as it had been well loved in its prime. I also wanted to take the opportunity to make it more my style.\u00a0 <\/span>Varathane Premium Fast Dry Interior Wood Stain in Ebony<\/span><\/a> was going to be exactly what I needed to get it there.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

Supplies<\/h3>\n

We gathered our supplies which included the Varathane wood stain<\/span><\/a>, Varathane Water Based Interior Polyurethane in clear satin<\/span><\/a>, orbital sander<\/span><\/a> and sanding discs<\/span><\/a> of various grits, a foam brush<\/span><\/a>, lint free cloth<\/span><\/a>, drop cloth<\/span><\/a>, and drill<\/span><\/a> to disassemble the sewing table.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prepping For Stain<\/h3>\n

We removed the top table pieces and hinges in order to sand\/stain the pieces properly.<\/p>\n

Prepping the surface for the new stain was going to first require removing the weathered old layer of stain with an orbital sander<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

Using various grits of sanding discs<\/span><\/a> in succession from coarse to super fine will give us a clean and smooth finish on the wood.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

We always sand in the direction of the wood grain.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

Every part of the sewing table received the same treatment to remove the old stain.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

Once we were done sanding all of the pieces down, we vacuumed up any dust and wiped everything down with a lint free cloth<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

Applying Varathane Premium Interior Wood Stain<\/h3>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

After stirring the stain<\/span><\/a> thoroughly, we used a foam brush<\/span><\/a> to liberally it on all of the sanded portions of the sewing table.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

We allowed the stain<\/span><\/a> to penetrate for 2-3 minutes, wiping with a lint-free cloth to remove the excess stain.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

The coverage of the Varathane Premium<\/span><\/a> is so good it only requires one coat.\u00a0 <\/span>This Ebony<\/span><\/a>\u00a0stain color is exactly what I was hoping for!<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

The longer you let the stain sit before wiping off, the darker the color.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, just look at that beautiful wood grain.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

Applying Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane<\/h3>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

We let the wood stain dry for 1 hour before grabbing the water based top coat<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>The Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane<\/span><\/a> was going to give us the protective finish a side table requires. At the same time letting the beautiful Ebony wood stain<\/span><\/a> shine thru the crystal clear layer.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

With a clean foam brush<\/span><\/a> we applied the stirred polyurethane along the direction of the wood grain in one smooth even coat.<\/p>\n

\"Furniture<\/p>\n

This coat dried to the touch in 2 hours and gave us an abrasion and scratch resistant surface.\u00a0<\/span>After 48 hours the pieces were cured and ready to be reassembled.<\/p>\n

My only regret is not having done this project sooner!\u00a0<\/span>This table quietly stores a vintage sewing machine but has new purpose as the perfect side table.<\/p>\n
