You should be able to cut 9 pieces out of each 8-ft. stud. You\u2019ll need 54 pieces total.<\/p>\n<p>Pro tip: Set up a stop block like I did here to make the repetitive cutting more efficient. With the stop block clamped in place, you won\u2019t have to measure every board each time, but you should check the stop block periodically to ensure that it didn\u2019t move and your measurements are still accurate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-99770 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/f8847a2b2be27be1fe223bc182f1c639.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-99771 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/7210039362399eb7940d84632c78342e.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 2: Sand the Game Pieces<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I used a bench sander to make sanding quick and easy. Sand off all the splinters and rough edges. Be sure to wear protective gloves just in case your hand slips &#8211; the sanding belt is fast and can hurt if you\u2019re not careful. You can then hand-sand the pieces with a 220-grit sandpaper, but I found that the bench sander made the game pieces smooth enough to handle and they slid easily when stacking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99772 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/6d58bed322d42b4fceb9f9bbcb5fbc66.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"525\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99773 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/855235ca950cc98f0ff058ff08819dc7.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 3: Build the Storage Box<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Using the cut list above, measure, mark, and cut the storage box pieces to length. I was impressed that this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Ryobi-18-Volt-ONE-ONE-10-in-Cordless-Brushless-Dual-Bevel-Sliding-Miter-Saw-Tool-Only-P3650B\/301687024?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD22%7C000000%7CJenWoodhouse%7C99764\">RYOBI cordless sliding miter saw<\/a> handled the wider boards with ease.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using pocket hole joinery, drill \u00be-in. pocket holes into the bottom 1&#215;12 and edge-join it with the 1 x 3 board with 1 \u00bc-in. pocket screws. These two boards will be the bottom of the box. Next, drill \u00be-in. pocket holes into the ends of the two 1 x 12 short sides. Construct the box with 1 \u00bc-in. pocket screws.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not using pocket hole joinery, you can edge-join the two bottom boards with just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Titebond-III-16-oz-Ultimate-Wood-Glue-1414\/100522343?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD22%7C000000%7CJenWoodhouse%7C99764\">wood glue<\/a>. Clamp and allow the glue to dry overnight, making sure that the boards are flat and aligned. Then, pre-drill pilot holes and use 1 \u00bc-inch wood screws to construct the box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99774 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/fb40cdc0e1d775b26c1153e0c056d726.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I used my router to carve The Home Depot logo on the long sides of the box and then I attached them to the short sides and bottom with 1 \u00bc-inch brad nails and wood glue. I recommend that you always use wood glue when joining with nails. You can also join the sides with 1 \u00bc-in. pocket screws or wood screws, if you\u2019d like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99775 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/f7d0bb697aa6d4729d4d540df0134e07.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99776 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/109b5430aa03738bc47c35d02ee9645a.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 4: Attach the Handles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I picked up a couple of these storage chest handles from the hardware aisle. Find the midpoint on the short sides and mark it. Pre-drill pilot holes and attach the handles to the sides of the box with the included screws.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/96c1ffbaba03d04f82b7c0c10f6a8fb6.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pro tip: It\u2019s helpful to have at least two drills so you don\u2019t have to switch out drill and driver bits quite so often. I\u2019m using the RYOBI hammer drill and impact driver here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99778 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/b5e4567cb7f39f3cecdc83961464d9ae.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor Block Stacking Game\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sand, paint and\/or stain, and finish as desired.
