Before you leave the store with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/1-in-x-4-in-x-8-ft-Weathered-Barn-Wood-Dark-Brown-Pine-Trim-Board-256152\/207186720?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">reclaimed wood board<\/a>, have them cut it down into the main (3) 16 in. base back\u00a0pieces you need. They can\u2019t do the 4 in. pieces since it\u2019s a safety\u00a0hazard with the\u00a0large scale equipment to cut pieces under 6 in.,\u00a0but those first three cuts are crossed off your list.<\/p>\n<p>Once you get the rest of your materials home, you will need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Ryobi-14-Amp-7-1-4-in-Circular-Saw-with-Laser-CSB135L\/205216329?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">circular<\/a>, miter, or table saw to trim down the rest of the wood into 4 in. pieces for the shelf portion of the sconce.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Stain the Wood<\/h3>\n<p>When\u00a0all the wood is cut to size: (3)16 in. pieces and (3) 4 in. pieces, you are ready for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Minwax-1-qt-Wood-Finish-Early-American-Oil-Based-Interior-Stain-70008\/100376183?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">stain<\/a>. This stain job is quick and easy to do with a rag. You are basically trying to fill in the raw edges of the wood you cut so it matches the reclaimed coloring on the outside.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Create the Tiles<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105284\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5c37d7147b024c8342f368062b95560d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s create the Moroccan tiles! I\u00a0decided on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Satin-Classic-Navy-Protective-Enamel-Spray-Paint-300115\/206603182?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">navy matte\u00a0spray paint<\/a> to keep them fairly neutral and classic,\u00a0but let this part be where you make it your own!\u00a0Home Depot\u2019s\u00a0spray paint colors are endless and there are several Moroccan stencils to choose\u00a0from online also.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105285\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/0cb3e4380273e11a772963f5b0ebcbf8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you see for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Jeffrey-Court-4-in-x-4-in-Light-Travertine-Tumbled-Wall-Tile-9-Pack-67542\/100178748?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">tile<\/a>,\u00a0I just used a basic tumbled travertine. I like the imperfect look they have in them being \u201ctumbled\u201d and rough in spots. The only\u00a0prep needed for these tiles is brushing the dust off them before applying spray paint.<\/p>\n<p>For painting time, lay out a\u00a0big drop cloth or tarp in a well ventilated area &#8211; preferably outside &#8211; and center\u00a0your stencil\u00a0on the tile. About 1 foot\u00a0away, spray your spray paint in a back and forth motion until the stencil looks fully filled in. Repeat for the remaining eight and let dry. Since these aren\u2019t getting any wear or exposure to elements inside, no need for a sealer in my DIY\u00a0opinion. Plus I wanted them to keep that matte finish look.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Assemble the DIY Sconce<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105286\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/cd4097e82a0aa55cb22f3d6c0bd8309e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1121\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once\u00a0your wood stain and tiles are dry,\u00a0it\u2019s time to assemble the sconce!\u00a0So that we know exactly where to place the shelf, lay out the tile on the board starting at the top with a \u00bc in. of the tile hanging over the edge on the top and each side. Then follow the other two tiles behind that. The shelf will butt right up against the bottom tile so now you know where the shelf\u00a0needs to go.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105287\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/c79a86b94b115a48503d17e7205af6f5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105288\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/c44389c24863d77de4b7b80efdfc4acb-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Slip the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Everbilt-1-1-2-in-Zinc-Plated-Corner-Brace-4-Pack-15304\/202033892?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">L-brackets<\/a> underneath and remove the bottom tile for the time being.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105289\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/c39640e07acafba63b548564b79d4af6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Make sure the shelf is sitting level and mark your marks for the 1 back screw and two bottom screws.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105290\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/9732ed84ac7d3c27de067c4b3faaa3b5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pre-drill the holes to make it easier to work with and then hand screw in the brackets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105291\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/7b2c6d8ed56249f4df2d0efe1ef67318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You might need to hold the sconces on the wall and do any final leveling before you screw the back screw all the way in so you can adjust as you finish.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105292\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3d6b9ec446aaa609b47291517a191c44.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the brackets and shelf\u00a0are securely attached, flip them over and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/OOK-20-lb-Zinc-Plated-Narrow-D-Ring-Hangers-with-Screws-3-Pack-50206\/100004803?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">add on the hook for hanging<\/a> about 2 in. down from the top centered in the middle.\u00a0These are fairly\u00a0heavy once all the\u00a0tiles are attached so these hooks are great to hold the weight.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Secure the Tiles<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105293\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/bac25f0c47daf93d8f42bccbb80f0ca6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We are almost done! Now it is time to secure the tiles to the boards using handy dandy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Loctite-9-fl-oz-Power-Grab-Express-All-Purpose-Adhesive-2022554\/206432092?cm_mmc=socialmedia%7Capronblog%7CD59%7C000000%7CNatalieFrank%7C105282\">construction adhesive<\/a>. I love this stuff for so many projects!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105294\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/e6aa7a6d88e7971230bad2d0859641da.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stay towards the middle when applying so it doesn\u2019t ooze out the sides. Secure them in place going from the bottom up since you already have the leveled shelf in place that way every tile is flush and level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105295\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/d68838fd75fc640b8ac43e77bd94e622-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then gently\u00a0place some heavy weight on top of the tiles and give them a couple hours to set up.<\/p>\n<h3>Final Reveal<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105296\" src=\"https:\/\/homeimprovementblogs.com\/hg-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3c5a3f1e9ed1993558ab24a054b28c51-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t installing them into a stud, I recommend drywall screws to make sure they are safe and sound once they have been hung up and adorned with extra weight from\u00a0candles, florals or other decorative pieces.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to hang\u00a0mine as you see with two\u00a0high and one lower in between.
