This office kitchen space makeover happened in a relative flash. Danielle Moss & Alaina Kaczmarski of The Everygirl had just moved into a new office space, and they wanted to freshen up the kitchen on a tight deadline.
The Home Depot’s kitchen refacing service helped Danielle and Alaina with the design of the new kitchen and then handled the installation in just a couple of weeks. And, as you’ll see, it looks fabulous!
Revamping a Chic Kitchen Space
We moved into our first office last September, five years after formally launching The Everygirl. As luck would have it, we found the perfect studio loft in Chicago’s West Loop – a bustling area that’s growing every day with new startups and co-working spaces.
Our office space is an open room with exposed brick walls, oversized timber beams, and high ceilings. Exactly what we always wanted! The walls were dark gray and the kitchen was dated, but we had big plans for this little office.
Fortunately, the team at The Home Depot was on board to help us transform our tiny kitchen into the gorgeous space it is now!
Here’s how the office kitchen space makeover unfolded.
The Before
As you can see, we were working with a fairly basic kitchen— all function, no beauty. There is no direct sunlight streaming in, so it can get pretty dark in here, especially in the winter. We wanted to brighten the space, not only to make it more livable, but we also wanted to make it better suited for shooting food and entertaining stories for our blog.
Lightening up the kitchen would brighten the whole office space, but we could never would have predicted just how much better it would be.
The Office Kitchen Space Makeover Design Goals
- Brighten the kitchen–we knew we wanted light colored cabinets, countertops, and a reflective backsplash that would add light.
- Beautify the space–update the laminate countertops, orange-hued wooden cabinets, hardware and faucet with more beautiful, quality fixtures.
- Maximize storage–add more drawers and cabinets to increase the amount of hidden and exposed storage.
The Office Kitchen Space After the Makeover
The Kitchen Cabinets
Outlining the look, functionality, and plan for the cabinets was the first step. Because we painted the office walls white and planned on having a white backsplash, we wanted to go with a soft neutral color for the cabinets. The paint color we chose for the cabinets is a mix between grey and beige… greige if you will.
We chose a classic Shaker Style cabinet door design and asked that an additional upper cabinet be added to extend the height and maximize storage.
The Home Depot design team drew up a plan to incorporate open shelving above the sink and oven. They’re perfectly placed to show off some of our prettier styling pieces and dishware.
The Farmhouse Sink and Bridge Faucet
The shining star of the kitchen is the large white farmhouse sink that anchors the center of the small space. We knew we wanted this traditional piece with a gorgeous bridge faucet in chrome. It’s very feminine and traditional and adds a beautiful backdrop for our photo shoots.
Quartz Countertops
We needed countertops that would be durable but also light and pretty. Marble looks great, but we knew that was a fickle material that stains easily. We ended up going with a quartz countertop in a pattern that has the look of marble, but is much tougher against staining.
The Kitchen Island
Finally, we worked with the Home Depot team to customize a kitchen island.
We really needed the functionality of an island but didn’t have a ton of space left, so the one the team designed is long and narrow. This way it doesn’t eat up too much of our work space in the studio, but it still offers additional counter and cabinet space. It also add another spot to work and enjoy coffee and donuts!
Having the new kitchen completely transformed our one-room office, and it couldn’t be more Everygirl. Not only did the light color of the cabinets and countertops brighten the space, but the reflection of the glossy subway tile backsplash truly magnifies that amount of light! We now have the best backdrop for shoots and we’ve even started filming our first video talk show with this kitchen as the “set.”
