Plastic prosthesis helps one dog live a better life [Video]

(BPT) – Hudson is a friendly 4-year-old pit bull mix, a therapy dog who brings smiles to everyone he meets. You wouldn’t know it now, but Hudson’s life began in tragedy: when he was just a few weeks old, he was abandoned on railroad tracks, severely abused. Fortunately, the “Railroad Puppy” was rescued. But he lost a paw due to his injuries. A loving owner, Richard Nash, adopted Hudson and set out to find a way to give back mobility to his dog.

Richard brought Hudson to Derrick Campana, an expert in veterinary prosthetics and orthotics who designed and built a custom plastic prosthetic paw for Hudson. Thanks to medical-grade plastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene, the prosthesis is durable, lightweight, and comfortable enough for Hudson to wear every day. After Derrick fitted the plastic paw onto the dog’s leg, Hudson took a few tentative steps… and then took off running. Now nothing stops Hudson from living a full, happy dog’s life.
